Brunei Muara and Seria, Brunei Darussalam

Summary of PB19 onsite kickoff phase

SEALNet Project Brunei Youth.R.I.S.E. (PB19) focuses on alleviating the risk of long term unemployment and underemployment among youths by promoting the RISE attributes (Resilience, Innovativeness, Skillfulness, and Employability). Our organizing partners include the Local university UBD Volunteering and Charity Club (UVC), Youth Development Centre and Anthony Abell College. A total of 31 mentors, mentees, project leaders and professional mentors from 7 countries came to Brunei to jumpstart the project. The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei and they have sponsored us for our accommodation at the youth center.

In the Leadership week, our international and local participants underwent a leadership training under the theme of “Enhancing Youth Resilience through Service Leadership” in the Inspiring hall of University of Brunei Darussalam. In addition to the Structured Learning Experience that was drafted by our Leadership Planning team, our event partners from various youth NGOs and Social Enterprises including Benchlab Co, Covered By Annisa, Generasi Bekarih and Bina Ukhwah also came to support us by either provide our participants with workshop/talks on employability, or to help to mentor them on entrepreneurship and leadership.

In the Service week, the team went to facilitate a Structured Learning Experience for our beneficiaries which are 31 students in Anthony Abell College (AAC) and 20 students from Youth development center (PPB). The purpose of the activities is to enhance the skills that can contribute to their employability. Our partners from Perspective Insan Academy and Global Shapers Bandar Seri Begawan, have also provided both our beneficiaries with soft skills workshop during the service week.

Sustainability phase

There are 4 identified action plans in promoting the sustainability of PB19 and to continue nurturing community leaders in Brunei and South East Asia, and to continue empowering beneficiaries with RISE attributes.

  1. UVCxPB19 Sustainability phase 1: This consist of General Leadership day (GLD) for UVC members facilitated by PB19 local team, and Youth.RISE workshops in AAC and PPB, carried out by the local members with a close cooperation with UVC for the next 1 to 2 years.

  2. Future Community Project Leaders: During the Project Management and Pitching day of LP week, 6 potential community projects were discussed and presented. Few teams has expressed their strong interest in executing the actual project in Brunei.

  3. Skills Scholarship funds: the team is looking to fund atleast 3 PPB students between August 2019-Dec 2019 to soft skills development workshops provided by our partners. The team plan to expand the numbers depending on the sustainability phase fundraising. Our Fundraising platform is still open for this purpose*.
