Community Issue

Plastic pollution is one of the problems any Southeast Asian country is facing. The most vulnerable to pollution, sadly, is usually the one who has to suffer the most. The residents from ‘Bai Giua’ (literal meaning: Middle Ground, or the ground in the middle of the river), Red River, Hanoi, living just 3 km away from Hanoi downtown, live their whole life next to unmanaged solid waste dumps, facing extreme pollution on a daily basis.

With that in mind, and through the support of Project S-house – a local social project that has been providing educational support for this community for more than 10 years, we aim to instill in all stakeholders a sense of responsibility to their surrounding environment through the use of plastic pollution education.

Model of Approach

SEALNet PV19 recruits committed members for positions as mentors (international college students) and as mentees (Southeast Asian high school students). Through 1-on-1 coaching, mentors are expected to equip mentees with an assorted array of leadership skills. All team members work with the community in Bai Giua, Hanoi on the education of plastic pollution.

Sustainability Plan

At SEALNet Project Vietnam 2019, we highly value the sustainability of a social project, hence, everyone in this project is encouraged to support the post-project development.

All participants are expected to use these lessons to hone their critical thinking and problem-solving skills and while so to interpret the interconnectedness between what human beings consume-dispose and the ecosystem.

By 2020:

  1. The local mentees from Hanoi will have continued the impact of PV19 by becoming the core of SEALNet Hanoi Club and generated a new scheme of work, supporting the local partners.
  2. The international members will have formed a PV19 Committee that functions as observers to provide 1-on-1 coaching for the local members and SEALNet Hanoi Club.
