Project Vietnam 2006

What is our target problem in Vietnam?

  • Low-income children not able to learn English because they cannot afford instruction

Objectives

  • Education through Technology
    • Introduce professors to the application of technology in their English curriculum
    • Help professors to apply more effective and inspirational methods of teaching
    • Instill the idea of learning through employing new skills in real settings and using community service as an opportunity
  • Community Service: Youth Mentorship
    • Raise awareness of community problems and how to serve the community
    • Build leadership and tutoring skills
    • Motivate youth to form personal action plans for the specific communities

Approach

  • The project comprises of two components which will be covered in two weeks:
    • Week 1: Training sessions
    • Week 2: Application of training and pilot implementation of SEALNet Tutoring Center and Lab
  • SEALnet will set up two centers in Danang University:
    • English Computer Laboratory: SEALNet will set up twenty computers with English-learning softwares
    • Public Tutoring Center: As a part of their English-learning curriculum, college students will apply the skills learned in the classroom by tutoring low-income children who cannot afford to learn English.
  • We will work with three groups:
    • University professors: a professional from SEALNet will guide them in applying technology to their teaching curriculum
    • Selected college students: SEALNet students will train them leadership and tutoring skills through workshops and collaborative activities
    • Selected high school students: SEALNet students will mentor and motivate them about the significance of community service-based learning and active participation in society

Day 3, June 21, Wednesday:

  • Training Day for SEALNet Members
  • High School Students Service Project 1: Tutoring Center Setup

Day 4, June 22, Thursday:

  • Computer Training and Tutoring Workshop 1 for Teachers, College Students, High School Students
  • Indiviual Mentorship Workshop for high school mentees
  • B.A.D.
  • Spotlight On

Day 5, June 23, Friday:

  • Computer Training and Tutoring Workshop 2
  • Local Community Service Program Discussion with High School students
  • B.A.D.
  • Spotlight On

Day 6, June 24, Saturday:

  • Computer Training and Tutoring Workshop 3
  • Indiviual Mentorship Workshop for high school mentees
  • B.A.D.

Day 7, June 25, Sunday:

  • Beach/Touring with high school mentees

  • Visit poor families in 3 groups
  • Perform Community Service Program in the three community with high school mentees
